About John Candy's Real Height

John Candy was a big man big on and off-screen. He was often described as 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighing 275 lb (looked more).

In his biography called “Laughing on the Outside,” the author (Martin Knelman) mentions:

Candy had about three hundred pounds on his 6-foot-3 frame.

Even on John Candy's death certificate, his height was 6’3”.

We took a careful look at John Candy in his movies and now we think that John Candy was surely close to 6'3' in his prime but later he started looking a  bit shorter.

In the movie Planes, Trains, And Automobiles John sure looked several inches taller than 6 feet tall Steve Martin.

In  Stripes, he looked to have an inch or so over Bill Murrey (6'1"), and Dan Aykroyd (6'1"). But then, in the movie “Splash”, John didn’t look that much taller than Tom Hanks (6").

From what we have seen of John, we have come to the conclusion that John was nearly 6’3” early in his career, but later, due to his weight and bad posture, he must have lost some height.

The height of John Candy in his prime was

6 ft 2½ in (189 cm)
